Inglés Científico y Técnico I - ID1111
This handbook was designed to help students expand their linguistic and strategic repertoires so they can interpret the information contained in scientific and technical texts in English. The first part, "Focus on Reading", presents a series of strategies to develop reading-comprehension skills. The second part, "Reading Selections for ID1111", presents a group of reading passages with exercises, so students have the opportunity to apply those strategies to authentic reading assignments.

First edition (2005) authored and compiled by Rubena St. Louis & Silvia Pereira. Original exercises have been contributed by: Noela Cartaya, Yris Casart, Virna Ferrari, Dafne González, Célia Guido. Berta Leiva, Marianela Najul, Silvia Pereira, Juan Pino, Ana María Posada, Magaly Rodríguez, María Luisa Rosenblat, Wilfredo Sequera, Carlos Torrealba and Marta Trías. This handbook was intended to be used during the three courses of the First Year English Program taught by Departamento de Idiomas at Universidad Simón Bolívar.
Further editions (2006-2011) were authored and compiled by Rubena St. Louis & Silvia Pereira, with Gilberto Berríos and Noela Cartaya. Interior design and production by Gilberto Berríos. Editing and proofreading by Gilberto Berríos, Noela Cartaya, Yris Casart, Carlos Mayora & Rubena St. Louis.
Seventh edition (2012) was adapted and edited by Silvia Pereira to comply with the new Reading Program in English for Science and Technology (2010) and intended to be used as instructional material for its first course.
Eighth edition (2015) was revised and edited by Yris Casart and Nelly Fernández. Proofread by Marianella Quintero.

This handbook was designed to help students become effective, independent and critical readers, by presenting argumentation as a rhetorical pattern typically found in science and technology English texts. The first part, “Focus on Argumentation”, describes the most important features of this rhetorical pattern. The second part −Research tools− helps students get acquainted with different types of texts that they will be using as major sources of information when conducting searches for research purposes. Finally, the third part includes a group of reading selections to practice the skills acquired with the first and second parts of the handbook.
