ABSTRACT :
A simple thickness measurement method is proposed for non consolidated, friable thick coatings
(1-100 μm), marking a furrow in the coating and observing with an optical microscope. Its low field depth
is used in association with the existence of a scaled micrometric screw which allows to focalize
respectively onto the naked substrate and onto the surface of the coating. The comparison of this
technique with conventional methods (profilometry, eddy currents, scanning electronic microscopy)
shows its higher simplicity, eficiency and economic interest.
